A nineteenth-century landscape garden of eight hectares: a lake with its dock, perspective vistas towards Milan, monumental trees, and a tulip tree once the tallest in Italy.

01 Il giardinoThe garden

Otto ettari di paesaggio disegnatoEight hectares of designed landscape

The park of Villa Besana extends over about eight hectares, with marked changes in level, crossed throughout by a carriage drive that descends in sinuous curves from the front of the villa down to the lake. Its structure has remained substantially unchanged since the garden was laid out in the nineteenth century.

I.

Il disegno e il vialeThe design and the drive

The structure of the park has not been substantially altered since the garden was laid out in the nineteenth century. It is therefore still possible to read the original design in all its completeness and complexity, and to perceive the various landscape elements that make it up.

At the top, the main entrance on Via Giovanni Besana is flanked by a row of cypresses. Below, beyond the lake, a gate giving onto Via Teresa Prevosti may have been the entrance that allowed the park to be walked in reverse, climbing the drive from below up to the villa.

Along the whole length of the drive, in both directions, there are views and perspective axes that reveal careful design, after the criteria of the mid-nineteenth century: the changes in level were used to create strongly scenic panoramas, with trees used above all to frame the views and a general composition still firmly structured.

II.

Gli assi e i cannocchiali prospetticiThe axes and the perspective vistas

The park divides essentially along two perspective axes that exploit the two orientations created by the changes in level. The main one runs centrally from the front of the building, towards the south / south-east, and leads the eye to the plain below, at the far end of which, on clear days, Milan can be seen. This axis is framed by two wings of trees composed almost entirely of conifers, and passes ideally through the centre of a group of Abies alba planted in a circle. It is the true perspective vista, whose focus, Milan, does not, however, coincide with the vanishing point: its depth is fully appreciated when, walking the drive and rounding a curve, beyond a short shaded stretch, the panorama of the plain opens to the left.

The second axis, not as rigidly defined as the first, runs along the western side of the villa, towards the lake set at the bottom of a small valley. It coincides with the view enjoyed from above over the sheet of water, and with the reverse view that climbs from the lake upwards, where the silhouette of two beeches joined in a single crown stands out. In the green wing to the east, along the boundary, two features emerge: St Helena's shrine, backed by a semicircle of cypresses, and the circle of Liriodendron tulipifera.

The two main curves of the drive, which each reverse the direction of travel, both turn about a centre: the higher one around the two beeches, the other around the circle of firs. There are also secondary axes, such as the one that runs from St Helena's shrine through the Labyrinth — a descending serpentine path edged with tall box hedges — and reaches a fir. These sequences of views combine with openings in the screen of trees, turns of the path, abrupt passages from shade to light: all still perceptible, despite some incongruous plantings and the losses caused by storms and cloudbursts.

Boschi, tigli e piantagioniWoods, limes and plantings

East of the parterre lies a little wood of lime trees, made up of monumental specimens of Tilia vulgaris, threaded with curving paths, with an undergrowth mainly of yews and hollies. From the lime wood, towards the south / south-east, begins the hornbeam tunnel, or Carpinata, which runs straight towards the Casino del Roccolo, beyond which the circle of the hornbeam roccolo unfolds. Parallel to the Carpinata, lower down, runs the Avenue of Palms.

Among the groups of trees introduced after the war, planted without regard for the original vegetation or design, notable are the planting of birches (Betula pendula) beside the Labyrinth, which radically changed its appearance through the seasons; a group of black poplars (Populus nigra) along the screen north of the tulip trees, in a condition of marked instability; and a row of willows (Salix) on one side of the view towards the lake.

Il liriodendro e i cerchi d'alberiThe tulip tree and the circles of trees

Among the works of clearly nineteenth-century character is the circle of Liriodendron tulipifera: already by 1938 they had reached a notable height, exceeding fifty metres. One of them was for many years the tallest tree in Italy.

The park is punctuated by circles of eight different species — tulip trees, firs, oaks, cryptomerias, cypresses, yews, columnar poplars — and by screens of trees that guide the eye along the perspective vistas, as far as St Helena's shrine enclosed in its semicircle of cypresses.
